The Clinical Services Seminars are a monthly series that focuses on clinical and materials topics of interest, targeting materials managers and nurse managers. The Clinical Services Seminars are just one of the many benefits available to our members. GNYHA Services, as well as its parent Greater New York Hospital Association (GNYHA), is committed to assisting members provide high-quality patient care and reducing costs.   • Advanced Wound Care: Incorporating Evidence into Practice (October 14, 2010)
  • This seminar will provide attendees with a basic foundation regarding the management of chronic wounds. Other objectives of the seminar included: 
    • To define the difference between acute and chronic wounds

    • To emphasize the importance of implementing evidence-based treatment strategies for the management of chronic wounds

    • To educate the participants about chronic wound etiologies and demonstrate how successful treatment strategies should address the underlying pathology

    • To discuss the basic principles of treatment for every chronic wound: Physical, Supportive, and Local aspects of care To facilitate decision-making regarding wound dressings and local wound care

    • To provide helpful hints for symptom management throughout the healing process

  • Ortho Trauma Forum (October 12, 2010)
    This seminar provided an overview of the very challenging physician preference product category. Other objectives of the seminar included: 
    • To provide an overview of the contracting/sourcing process with a high-level reimbursement discussion 

    • To facilitate roundtable discussions between suppliers, clinicians, and supply chain professionals

    • To provide an overview of Premier/GNYHA Services tools

  • New CMS Rules - How to Implement and Strengthen the Tie Between Medicare Payment and Quality (September 15, 2010)
    This seminar focused on important information that will review the impact of new changes in CMS value-based purchasing aimed at prevention of Healthcare Acquired Infections (HAI). Other objectives of the seminar included: 
    • Provide insight and updates of the CMS Inpatient Prospect Payment System (IPPS) program, as well as overall health care reform and its relation to the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN)
    • Describe the value of surveillance of health care associated infections in safety and quality of patient care
    • Understand the connection between new reporting requirements and reimbursement incentives from CMS for 2011 and beyond
  • Incorporating the New Nutrition Guidelines into Practice (July 29, 2010)
    This Seminar focused on the recently published Guidelines for the Provision and Assessment of Nutrition Support Therapy in the Adult Critically III Patient by (A.S.P.E.N) and the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM). Presenter reviewed how Immune Modulating Nutrients can be incorporated into the treatment of patients with ARDS, ALI, and Sepsis to improve patient outcomes including length of stay in the ICU and attendees participated in case studies.
  • Incontinence Associated Dermatitis and Pressure Ulcers: What is the connection? (May 19, 2010)
    The May 19, 2010 seminar focused on Dermatitis and Pressure Ulcers, the differences, and what is the connection. Other objectives of the seminar included:
    • Discuss the risk factors for IAD and pressure ulcers on the heels
    • Identify methods to reduce skin injury from incontinence and pressure
    • Describe the connection between IAD and pressure ulcers
  • Strategies for Compliance in Hand and Environmental Hygiene (April 21, 2010)
    The April 21, 2010 seminar was presented by Ecolab and covered the science of skincare, human behavior and compliance, the latest research and best practices for environmental disinfection, and best practices for environmental disinfection.
  • RFID: The Value and Benefits of Staying on Track (March 17, 2010)
    The March 17, 2010 seminar focused on what RFID is, how is works, and all of its capabilities. Other objectives of the seminar included: other options for RFID, RFID applications in regards to Asset Management/Inventory, as well as applications for patient control, staff, and visitors.
